Water Charity: An Act Highly Encouraged in Islam
Water charity (giving water to those in need) is highly encouraged in Islam because:
Water is a basic necessity for all living beings
Its reward continues to flow (ongoing charity / sadaqah jariyah) even after death
It was described by the Messenger of Allah (SAW) as the best form of charity
It can be intended as a gift for deceased parents
It provides extensive benefits for health, the economy, and the environment
Let us race to do good by setting aside some of our sustenance to provide clean water for those in need. Because every drop of water we give will become an unending stream of reward—in this world and the Hereafter.
Allah says:
"The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed of grain that sprouts seven ears; in every ear there are a hundred grains. Allah multiplies for whom He wills, and Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing." (QS. Al-Baqarah: 261)
Virtues of Water Charity:
Opens the doors of sustenance and repels calamities
Becomes a saving deed on the Day of Judgment
Every drop of water drunk by another person becomes a reward for the giver
Giving water is not merely providing a drink—it is bringing life to others and attaining blessings from Allah SWT.
From a Social Perspective, Water Charity:
Saves lives from dehydration and diseases caused by unclean water
Reduces the economic burden on communities with limited access to clean water
Provides direct benefits for drinking, ablution (wudu), cooking, and hygiene
